White Canvas
Home to a professional photographer cum videographer, a compact studio apartment has been transformed into a white canvas.
Every surface and corner performs multiple function and use. Projections are cast onto the white washed ceiling and wall surfaces, coupled with black-out night curtains, the home becomes an instant cinema. Indirect bounced light is introduced at areas of rest. Soft light radiates off the off-white walls and curtains, giving visual comfort and relief for the home users especially after hours of computer works & photo shoots.
Contrary to the principle of having built-in cabinets to declutter, metal frame open shelving units flank both lengths of the unit. Painted in matte white to camouflage with the walls, sense of spaciousness & lightness is maintained. A layer of translucent blind panels screens are added in front of the open wardrobe, allowing the user to hide away any mess while enjoying a soft glowing night light.
All loose furniture and fittings are selected based on their ability to be stowed away or doubled up in their functions. With folding sofa bed and modular tables, reconfiguration into a home photo studio is made easy, fulfilling the owner’s requirement of working from home.
In contrast with the living space, dark graphite grey tones are introduced to anchor down the kitchen and storage space. Maintenance requirement is kept minimal with the choice of anti-finger print and stain resistant materials. Sharing with equipment store, cooking area is planned with an efficient foot print with smart storage solution such as integrated pull out trays which double up as additional counter tops and stand-alone cooking hob which can be stowed away when not in use. Separated by a layer of translucent cold room curtains, from efficient energy usage point of point, the equipment storage area is kept under controlled cool environment and is naturally lit in the day.
A white canvas home designed to create freedom in creative works and frees up the possibilities of compact living and working in the urban city.
